PLUTOCRATS, POPULISTS, AND THE GLOBAL ECONOMY

Chrystia Freeland MP, HARVARD AB90, Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre, Parliament of Canada, and Former Managing Director and Editor, Consumer News, Thomson Reuters

A populist wave is crashing down on both sides of the Atlantic, according to Chrystia Freeland. The rise of the new global super-rich, the power of globalization, and the technology revolution may be creating a divide that is not just economic, but also cultural. Out of this rift, a puzzle has emerged in which the economic power of plutocrats has continued to grow, but the populists are increasingly taking over the political system. Should we brace ourselves for more extremist politics and rancorous political debates? And how can plutocrats and populists find solutions that make the global economy work better for everyone?

Chrystia Freeland MP is the Liberal Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre in the Parliament of Canada, and cochairs the party’s Economic Council of Advisors. Previously, she was managing director and editor of consumer news at Thomson Reuters, which she joined in 2010 as editor-at-large. Prior to Reuters, Freeland held numerous senior positions at the Financial Times, including deputy editor, US managing editor, UK news editor, Moscow bureau chief, Eastern Europe correspondent, editor of its weekend edition, and editor of FT.com. She has also held positions with Canada’s The Globe and Mail, Washington Post, and The Economist. She is the author most recently of Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else. Freeland received her BA at Harvard University and obtained a Master’s degree at Oxford University, where she studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

Chrystia Freeland’s book, Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else, will be available for purchase and signing after the program.
