US-EU-China Politics with 30+ Year Veteran of Dutch Diplomatic Corp
Ambassador Rudolf Simon Bekink became ambassador to the U.S. from the Netherlands in 2012, following a four-year assignment as Dutch ambassador to the People's Republic of China. Amb. Bekink brings a unique perspective on the balance of power between the U.S. and China, as well as rare knowledge of the EU, having previously served as Dutch ambassador to Belgium (2004-08) and to Sweden (2000-04). His posting to Washington is a return to the U.S. where he served as the First Secretary to the Embassy's political department from 1982-86, covering Africa, Latin America, Europe and protocol.
Throughout his 36-year diplomatic career, Amb. Bekink has served as the Charge d' Affaires in Ghana; Deputy Head of Division of the Ministry of Economic Affairs; Deputy Head of Mission to the Mission of the Dutch Permanent Representative to the Office of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris; and Director of Protocol for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during which time he directed state visits to the Netherlands including from France, Belgium, and Japan. Early assignments included roles in Athens (Greece), Luanda (Angola) and the East Asia Division of the Foreign Ministry.
Klaas van der Tempel, Consul General of the Netherlands in Chicago, will join Amb. Bekink and the Harvard Club. All guests will be required to show a valid photo ID for entrance to Sidley Austin.
