The challenges facing the United States healthcare system have been widely reported and represent perhaps the most critical domestic issue for national and state policymakers as well as private employers.  The demand for greater value from the system, with value defined as improvements in health divided by total costs, is not only an imperative for US business competitiveness, but also a moral one.  This conference aims to provide perspective on the concurrent challenges of rising costs despite still unmet needs through a review of some new ways that physicians and scientists are organizing our approach on the state of health and disease, along with a sampling of new ventures that endeavor to turn these challenges into opportunity.
