Cartographic Tales of Chicago History with Dennis McClendon

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Location: McDermott, Will & Emery

Historic maps of Chicago tell all kinds of intriguing stories about the city's origins and development: vanished creeks and woods, big projects never accomplished, forgotten ethnic groups and neighborhoods, mysterious subdivisions, abandoned industrial areas, vice districts and world's fairs, ghosts of railroad stations and streetcar lines and freight tunnels, reminders of a constantly changing Loop. Planning has been central to the growth of the city and its historical maps provide a rich documentation of its growth.

Dennis McClendon is the Chicago cartographer, geographer and historian who produced the maps for the Encyclopedia of Chicago.  He produced the maps and wrote The Plan of Chicago: A Regional Legacy for the Burnham Plan Centennial.  A popular speaker, Dennis was invited to speak at the Chicago Map Society on "Chicago History as Seen Through Maps."  Online, his animated map sequence dramatically shows the growth of the city from 1850-1990 and the accompanying description documents some of the developments accompanying the population growth.  If you have an interest in Chicago Maps over the history of the city, Dennis’ site is one of the best on the web!
