Dr. VanRooyen is Director of the
Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, a university-wide center that provides
research and education related to humanitarian crises. Dr. VanRooyen has worked
extensively in humanitarian assistance in over thirty countries affected by war
and disaster, including Somalia, Bosnia, Rwanda, Iraq, North Korea, Darfur-Chad
and the Democratic Republic of Congo, both as an emergency physician and a
policy advisor with numerous relief organizations, including CARE, Save the
Children, Physicians for Human Rights and Samaritans Purse International
Relief.
Dr. VanRooyen is a Professor at both Harvard Medical School and Harvard School
of Public Heath, and teaches courses on humanitarian operations in war. He
lectures widely and has authored over 70 publications related to
international humanitarian assistance, including the textbook "Emergent
Field Medicine."

The mission of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) is to relieve human suffering in war and disaster by advancing the science and practice of humanitarian response worldwide. HHI fosters interdisciplinary collaboration in order to:
- Improve the effectiveness of humanitarian strategies for relief, protection, and prevention;
- Instill human rights principles and practices in these strategies;
- Educate and train the next generation of humanitarian leaders.
