“North Korea Update: What’s Up Now?” by Walter L. Keats, AB ’67

Since 1972 Walter Keats, ’67, a social anthropology major at Harvard, has been traveling extensively in Asia. To date he has visited the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK; North Korea) twenty-eight times. His first visit was in April 1995 and his most recent was in September 2011. Among other organizations Walter is a member of The Korea Society in New York, the National Committee on North Korea in Washington, the National Committee on American Foreign Policy in New York, and the Royal Asiatic Society Korea Branch in Seoul.

He will report on his most recent meetings with officials, scholars and policy makers involved with the DPRK and with his analysis of the future of U.S.-North Korean relations under the new leadership. In his presentation he will share insights, particularly about the developing economic situation in North Korea, gained as a “North Korea watcher” for more than a decade and a half. He will be happy to entertain questions during and after the presentation which will be accompanied by PowerPoint presentation showing North Korea today.
