  • Gain an understanding of the business of the NFL

The National Football League is the world's most profitable sports league. According to Forbes, the average NFL team is worth $1.43 billion, up 23% from 2013. For the eighth consecutive year, the most valuable team is the Dallas Cowboys, worth $3.2 billion. Rounding out the top four are the New England Patriots, worth $2.6 billion, Washington Redskins, worth $2.4 billion and New York Giants, valued at $2.1 billion.

The NFL generates more than $9 billion a year in revenue. The NFL is more lucrative than any other professional sports league. And, Commissioner Roger Goodell has set a heady goal for the owners to increase NFL revenues to $25 billion by 2027. The question is, "How will this growth come about?"

Grubman is known as the league's top money man, reporting directly to Commissioner Goodell. If Commissioner Roger Goodell is the quarterback of the NFL headquarters, Eric Grubman is more like the running back, negotiating around, over and through obstacles while always trying to advance the ball.

Grubman is the league's chief deal maker, a long time Goldman Sachs investment banker who plays a crucial role in major transactions such as the sale of a team, the construction of stadiums, or the various relationships with league partners. He leads the league's strategic investment fund, and other key strategic initiatives.

The NFL is spinning into a sports and entertainment and media venture with Grubman leading the helm of NFL Ventures. The NFL is the first professional sports league to unveil a venture capital arm, a path to widening its already expansive revenue stream. In 2013, the league teamed up with Providence Equity Partners in its new undertaking. The focus is on investing in "sports-and entertainment-related media assets".

Grubman is the league's point man on team relocation. Momentum continues to build toward a NFL return to Los Angeles after 20 years of being absent of a NFL team. Grubman is leading the charge. Recently, he addressed the assembled owners on what's happening in Los Angeles, and with the St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers who are vying for a move to the 2nd largest metropolitan area in the country and for new stadiums. After meeting with the 32 owners, Grubman said he has growing confidence an NFL team will be in Los Angeles, perhaps two teams and perhaps as soon as 2016.
