Join Harvard Club of Chicago (HCC) families for a special program:

Tinkering Lab at the Chicago Children's Museum

Hosted by Natalie Bortoli, EdM '03, Vice President, Educational Programming & Experience Development at the Chicago Children's Museum (CCM).

"Over and over, the story is the same:  Simple toys that make the child do the most interesting part of the work are best for growing brains, hands, bodies."  Jennifer Farrington, President & CEO, Chicago Children's Museum

Join us for a hands-on morning in Tinkering Lab, Chicago's first DIY makerspace for families!  Step into the ultimate workshop where the museum provides the space and resources, and you decide what to do next.  We're talking REAL tools, REAL materials and the freedom to innovate and explore life outside those fancy computer and smartphone screens.  Watch a video of Tinkering Lab in action.

Natalie Bortoli, EdM '03, will be our guide, sharing the principles and value of tinkering, and offering tips on how to bring the tinkering mindset into your home.  Children will enjoy a light breakfast snack during the brief presentation.  Next, children, alongside their parents or grandparents, will have free range to tinker (supported by Ms. Bortoli and museum staff), get their hands on real tools and a wide variety of materials, and bring the things in their imagination to life.

We'll have exclusive access to Tinkering Lab until 10:00 a.m., at which point the museum will open to the public; participants can stay in the space for as long as they like, or visit the other exhibits in the museum.

This program is perfect for:

  • Children ages 5-10
  • Parents and grandparents who want to learn about how to develop a tinkering mindset, and how to encourage inquiry, exploration, and problem solving when playing with their children and grandchildren.
  • Anyone interested in building and making; open-ended exploration; using real tools

If interested, please register ASAP!  This program has a maximum capacity of 30 participants.  No registrations will be permitted after Wednesday, March 25.
