JONATHAN BRERETON is Chief Executive officer of Accion Chicago, a nonprofit whose mission is to provide access to capital and personalized business counseling to entrepreneurs unable to secure such financial tools from traditional sources. The organization is the largest microlender in the region, serving Illinois and Northwest Indiana, and reaching thousands of small business owners annually, enabling them to provide for their families, launch or grow their businesses, create jobs, and stabilize neighborhoods. As CEO since 2004, Brereton has guided the organization’s dynamic growth and impact throughout the area and fostered the expansion of the local microlending industry. In 2011 he implemented the Chicago Microlending Institute, a first-of-its-kind initiative, which trained additional Chicago-focused microlenders to help meet the growing demand for small business loans not serviced by banks. This project is now the model for training qualifying Women’s Business Centers nationally.
JOSEPHINE LEE has served as artistic director of Chicago Children’s Choir since 1999, and was appointed president in 2010. In June 2014, Ms. Lee received the Jesse L. Rosenberger Medal, which recognizes achievement through research, in authorship, in invention, for discovery, for unusual public service or for anything 'deemed of great benefit to humanity’, from the University of Chicago. Through her vision and leadership, the Choir has become a civic treasure and cultural icon. Ms. Lee has solidified longstanding partnerships with Chicago’s renowned arts institutions, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera, and Ravinia Festival, and has expanded the Choir’s artistic breadth through celebrated collaborations with the finest theater and dance organizations.
JEFF McCARTER is the Founder & Executive Director of Free Spirit Media, which he created in order to share his experience as a media professional (cameraman, editor, and Emmy Award-winning producer) with youth from under-resourced communities. In mainstream media, Jeff witnessed the lack of diversity in both representation and opportunity. Now, Free Spirit Media cultivates diverse youth voices to transform media and society. Jeff was a founding co-chair of the Chicago Youth Voices Network and serves on Chicago’s Committee for Media Access. He is a thought leader in the fields of youth media education and digital media and learning, and has presented at multiple conferences, including DML (Digital Media and Learning) ACM (Alliance for Community Media) and Media Rise.
ARLOA SUTTER is the founder and visionary leader of Breakthrough Urban Ministries in Chicago. In 1992, Arloa opened an unused church storefront room and began to serve hot coffee and lunch to the homeless. She began to build relationships with those in need and focused on providing shelter, hot meals, counseling, and supportive services for homeless men. In 2000, Breakthrough renovated a building in East Garfield Park on Chicago’s west side to expand their capacity to serve homeless women. Shortly after, a youth and family services program was added, In March, 2008, Breakthrough opened a second building in East Garfield Park. The Breakthrough Ministry Center houses a shelter and service program for homeless men and the headquarters for the ministry. Today, Breakthrough stands as a center of hope for community and residents and families of Chicago’s west side.
SANDEE KESTRUL is the President and co-founder of I.C. Stars, an innovative nonprofit leadership and technology training program founded in 1999 to prepare inner-city adults for technology and community leadership. Prior to I.C. Stars, Sandee’s experience as an educator, diversity trainer, educational consultant and a performing artist drew her creative talents to the forefront. She was active in developing and enhancing the simulation-based curriculum for I.C. Starts student interns, which integrates leadership development, technology training and business skills in an intensive four-month “boot camp” training model. To date, over 185 students have graduated. Importantly, the outcomes are five times better than those reported by organizations in the field. I.C. Starts students are not just more successful at getting and retaining jobs, they are also taking responsibility for lifting others in their communities.
