From Refugee Camp to Harvard: How to Inspire Others

Since graduating from Harvard, where he gave the commencement address, Mawi Asgedom, AB '99, has spoken to more than one million people.  Mawi has inspired over 1,000 audiences in more than 40 states. Find out why Oprah Winfrey calls him “Amazing” and Harvard Magazine describes him as “Magnetic.”

In this powerful presentation to our Club, Mawi will tell his life story (fleeing war-torn Ethiopia and then a UN refugee camp in the Sudan) and inspire attendees in their own journeys. Mawi's bestselling memoir, Of Beetles and Angels: A Boy's Remarkable Journey from a Refugee Camp to Harvard, has been read as a one-book, one-community reading selection by hundreds of schools and communities including the cities of Philadelphia and Green Bay. His teen-success guides, The Code, Win the Inner Battle, and Nothing is Impossible, have also been used in thousands of classrooms. Citing the impact of his work, The Illinois Association of Teachers of English named Mawi the 2006 Illinois Author of the Year. Mawi has been extremely generous and gracious in his support of the Harvard Club of Chicago’s Early College Awareness programs over the past several years. His ability to connect with underprivileged students and their families to deliver the vital message that a college education is an attainable goal is unparalleled.

Please join us at what should be a truly fascinating and inspiring program with a truly remarkable individual and role model.
