The
Cliff Dwellers is a venerable institution in our city with a
spectacular outside terrace overlooking Millenium Park. Enjoy this
fabulous view while sipping a refreshing drink on the Club's 22nd floor
and savor a summer supper of hamburgers, hotdogs and the usual summer
fare.
Our Speaker, Michael R. Van Valkenburgh, the Charles Eliot Professor of Landscape Architecture at Harvard's Graduate School of Design (GSD), is probably the most celebrated landscape architect in America. He is in Chicago as the designer of the Maggie Daley Park that is directly in front of the Cliff Dwellers terrace and he is also doing work at the Botanic Gardens in Highland Park. However, our Club is very indebted to Mr. Van Valkenburgh as he has donated his skills and has created the landscaping around the Johnston Gate in the Harvard Yard. The Harvard Club of Chicago has funded the restoration of this 125 year old Gate is named after Chicago native, Samuel Johnston, class of 1855 and remains "a little piece of Chicago" in Cambridge.
