HarvardX for Alumni: What Will You Study?

Video Coursework and HCC Discussion Group

If you could attend Harvard now, what would you study?  Greek Mythology?  Computer Science? Poetry? Einstein? China? Neuroscience? Register now, study them all, and meet with other Chicago area alums to discuss.

You were admitted to Harvard for your intellectual curiosity and drive. When you graduated, Harvard knew this desire to learn would never be satiated. In March 2014, Harvard is launching “HarvardX for Alumni,” or HAA1x, a free, alumni-only opportunity to sample the intellectual riches and innovative approaches of HarvardX online education. This exclusive, experimental course themed “Explorations in Learning,” is comprised of 7 segments from 7 popular HarvardX online courses.  Harvard Club of Chicago will have its own local Chicagoland discussion groups. Watch the HAA1x video here to learn more.

The Experience
Led by a roster of celebrated Harvard professors, the 7 HarvardX course segments will be released every 2 weeks from March 22 through June 14, 2014. Segments will include: Neuroscience, The Poetry of Early New England, Computer Science, The Ancient Greek Hero, China, Tangible Things, and Einstein Revolution. HarvardX faculty director and GSAS alumnus Rob Lue will provide the overview, threading the 7 segments together throughout the course. Course content has been specially curated for this alumni experience, and will include exclusive faculty conversations.

Participants are encouraged to watch the course videos (approximately 30-60 minutes per week) and meet locally to discuss. The professors and TFs will actively monitor an online alumni discussion forum, and supplemental online reading content will be available for further learning.

Harvard Club of Chicago Discussion Group
To get most out of HAA1x, HCC is forming a discussion group that will meet every 2 weeks in sync with the course segments. Preparation is simple—just watch the 30-60 minutes per week of course content. Location and time will be decided by the group, and may include meeting in the suburbs as well as downtown Chicago. You may choose to attend all 7 discussions, or only the ones you prefer. The goal is to gather as many local alumni as possible to partake in all or part of this learning experience!

While at Harvard, we learned that great minds don’t always think alike. Perhaps that is what we miss the most. This spring, we invite you to engage with fellow Harvard alumni, get challenged, reconnect with Harvard, and intellectually refuel. We encourage all local alumni to join HCC in this exceptional opportunity.

Registration is two-part.
Must be Harvard Alum (Chicago-based) to register yourself and guests.

HAA1x is discussion-based and geared toward Harvard alumni clubs and SIGs. Signing up with HCC is highly recommended.  Discussion groups will begin the last week of March or early April 2014.

  1. Sign up for the Harvard Club of Chicago Local Discussion Group here.  The fee is $10 to cover administrative costs.
