Wendy Doniger (O'Flaherty) holds the Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor Chair in History of Religions: the University of Chicago Divinity School, the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations and the Committee on Social Thought.  She graduated summa cum laude in Sanskrit and Indian Studies from Radcliffe College.   Her Masters Degree and PhD were earned at Harvard.  Her second PhD in Oriental Studies is from Oxford University.  She has also been awarded six honorary doctorates. 

Are Diamonds a Woman's Best Friend? 

The mythology of gold engagement rings goes back to the ancient Romans.  But De Beers invented a brand new myth of diamond engagement rings in the 20th century and a brilliant advertising campaign sucessfully marketed it as part of the old mythology.
