From Port-au-Prince to Lima to Boston, much of the world is experiencing rising levels of inequality. Among some of the poorest communities in the world, Dr. Paul Farmer, in his work as a physician and anthropologist, and Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez, in his work as a theologian and priest, have worked towards their shared goal of alleviating human suffering and building a better and more just world for the poor. Today, both are internationally recognized for their pragmatic approaches to global health and social justice.  What has influenced their life’s work? How can societies advance the cause of their most marginalized citizens? Join Dr. Farmer, a leading figure in global health, and his mentor Fr. Gustavo, a noted theologian widely known as the father of liberation theology for a discussion about inequality, social justice, medicine, and lessons from their lifelong experiences of living and working with the poor. 

Dr. Paul Farmer is the Kolokotrones University Professor at Harvard University and chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a cofounder of Partners In Health, and the United Nations Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Community Based Medicine and Lessons from Haiti. Dr. Farmer’s work focuses on community-based treatment strategies for infectious diseases in resource-poor settings, health and human rights, and the role of social inequalities in disease distribution. He is the author of numerous books including Pathologies of Power: Health, Human Rights and the New War on the Poor; Infections and Inequalities: The Modern Plagues; The Uses of Haiti; Haiti After the Earthquake; and To Repair the World. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Humanitarian Award and the Margaret Mead Award. He earned his BA from Duke University and his MD and PhD from Harvard University.

Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez is a Dominican priest and professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. At 85, he divides his time between his parish church in the slums of Lima and the classroom at Notre Dame. He is the author of numerous books including We Drink From Our Own Wells: The Spiritual Journey of A People; On Job: God-Talk; Suffering of the Innocent; and The Truth Shall Make You Free. His book, A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics, and Salvation is the foundational text for the liberation theology movement which interprets the Christian tradition from the perspective of the poor and oppressed by exposing unjust social, economic and political systems and calling for a “preferential option for the poor.” Among his many honors and awards are the Niebuhr Medal from Elmhurst College, and recognition by the French Legion of Honor for his tireless work on behalf of the poor. Fr. Gustavo studied psychology and philosophy in Belgium at l’Université Catholique de Louvain and earned his doctorate from l’Université Catholique de Lyon in France.

Their book, In the Company of the Poor: Conversations with Dr. Paul Farmer and Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez, will be available for purchase and signing.
