with Distinguished Harvard Professor

Dr. Ali S. Asani, AB '77, PhD '84

 

Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Prof. Asani graduated from Harvard College in 1977 summa cum laude, concentrating in the Comparative Study of Religion.  He stayed on at Harvard to earn his PhD in 1984 from the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations (NELC)

Dr. Asani is Professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures at Harvard University.  He holds a joint appointment between the Committee on the Study of Religion and the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations where he is currently the Chair.  He also serves in the Department of Sanskrit and Indian Studies. 

At Harvard he teaches courses on various aspects of the Islamic tradition, in addition to language courses on Urdu/Hindi, Sindhi, Gujarati, and Swahili.  He also teaches "Culture and Belief 19: Understanding Islam and Contemporary Muslim Societies;" "Culture and Belief 12: For the Love of God and His Prophet: Religion, Literature and the Arts in Muslim Societies;" etc.  He also directs the university's PhD program in Indo-Muslim Culture.

Prof. Asani will speak to the Club on the timely topic of "Understanding Islam: Behind the Headlines."
